Thanks Wayne! Yes, it is a great time of year to make those plans and review them. Steph and I just did some of that on our end of the year get away...and really enjoyed the process. Thanks for adding to the discussion Wayne :)

Brent, thanks for this timely reminder post! It's a natural time of year to make our plans for the coming year (even though we should probably do this monthly). Definitely something to think about AND act on.

Yikes Colin! Don't lose heart, okay? I've had my share of false starts and big yucky failures too. Most people have. As counter-intuitive as it sounds, sometimes God allows us to fail because he has something bigger for us to do. God has to prepare us to handle it though. Often preparation involves building our character and removing obstacles. Consider those job losses, etc. as obstacles God cleared away for you. Usually we know at some level when something isn't working but we hang on. That uncomfortable feeling means, "make a change." I've learned the hard way that when God wants you to move, he makes you uncomfortable, and if you don't obey, he moves you by force (and it's never pretty). Get back in the game, Colin. Keep playing. The game is far from over. If you quit now, you're going to miss the big pay-off that is just two more steps away.

I imagine it's somewhat tiring being away from home, far away, for a length of time...and of course, your public is waiting! LOL

I've been amazed at how much support I've gained by just verbalizing where I am in my calling journey with people around me. I grew up in an environment where we were all scrapping for what we could get...glad my life is in a better place now!

Thanks Gwyn! I think we did set a record w/ Emoticons in this discussion :)
I think we are all prone to that 'do it ourself' mentality at some level or another. Knowing your personality type (the same as mine), I completely agree that you need good people around you, people to encourage, support, encourage, and kick you in the butt when necessary :).
I had some coffee tonight (decaf), so I'm beginning to feel like a human being again after several days without it! Have had a great time here in Tbilisi, but ready to come home soon....

Great discussion going on here so of course I couldn't pass it up. :) And I want to get in on the Emoticons! :)

When I look at my past failures or mistaken forays, (gentler term), what I seemed to lack was enough support, from having the "wrong" people around me, or no people because I didn't talk to anyone about what I was trying or wanting to move towards. I also lacked a lot of reality. :) Didn't research enough or talk to the right people. I always had the mindset that I had to create and build something on my own and all alone.
Thankfully, I've outgrown most of that mindset. :) And that's why the PYC group and the blogs, etc. are so valued and needed!

Glad you're able to handle some coffee again Brent, Elixir of Life, in any country, I guess!

Your welcome Deacon! Appreciate your honesty in your feedback and your personality tendencies. As I write this, I'm sitting at a McDonald's in Tbilisi, Georgia....exhausted after a Pursuing Your Calling workshop.. You've helped encourage me today...and I needed it :)

This post really hits home with me Brent, and these comments are a GREAT read too! My DISC profile says I tend to live life in a "Ready, Ready, Ready" state instead of "Ready, Aim, Fire." Colin may have crashed and burned, but I can honestly say I admire his ability to get out there and really do something. That's a big challenge for me and one I work very hard on.

I love Josh's comment about failure meaning you've really tested yourself. I want to know how great I can be, and it sounds like failing is a part of that process I need to stop being afraid of!

Thanks Brent and everyone else who commented. Great stuff!

Just read Derek Sivers book, "Anything You Want". It helped me to learn a few things about my past business failures and my current reticence. In case you have a copy of the book I've included the page number for reference.

My first failure is on page 47; I wasn't ready for order volume to double, but it did.

Second failure, page 21; I built a huge app for a big client, but they changed their mind.

My current problem? Page 2; I've lost my compass.

And I did not even consider earlier times when I was in sales, because it wasn't actually my own business. Still, those failures were mostly my own and mostly reflected my total lack of respect for calling.

The book is very helpful and will help me to help my son Andy, as well. He is an unabashed artist and I think he will catch onto what Sivers is saying much more easily than I.

Colin,
I have been studying entrepreneurs for quite a while and they all seem to go through the big learning experiences similar to those you have mentioned. This reflects what Brent said but those entrepreneurs that are successful now say they needed those failures to learn how to better run their future businesses. It makes me happy that you are getting the itch to move forward again and you are also seeking council on the right approach. Keep it up, I am rooting for you.

Thank you, Brent! I enjoyed this pod cast! I felt like I was walking with you... :)

Your words particularly resonate with me, as I recently plunged from my career in Real Estate and financial services to follow my passion of writing, speaking and coaching. I had mentioned to some during this decision that the risk of not pursuing my dream far exceeded the risk of pursuing it. I encourage all, of course, to give thought and prayer to any decision. If God calls, however, follow with faith. Trusting Him in faithful obedience does involve risk...but also brings rewards beyond our imagination!

Thank you again, Brent!

Abundant blessings always,

Colin -
Thanks for taking time to share some of your story here...it really adds a lot to the discussion.
You've been through a bunch! And...I think there's much to learn from all your experiences. The challenge is to take the best from all of those experiences...to learn from them...and move on into the future.
Because you and I have interacted quite a bit, I think I know you better than most people who comment on our blog. I think you've got a ton to offer to others....and I think God uses you in ways even more than you realize in your work, your family, in life. But...I know you are going to move forward from these past experiences and learn from them....and you'll have an even bigger impact on peoples' lives in the future.
Always good to see you interacting on our blogs Colin...thanks so much for taking time to do this.....

Sad to say, but I've gotten a bit thinner skinned with age, I think. I took a lot of risked and tried a lot of things earlier on in my life, but it is harder for me now. My last career melt down left me either unemployed or radically underemployed for two years. I have never returned to the income level I had in 2001 and I'm at about 75% of that, now, ten years later. I've started over three times, been bankrupt twice, and homeless once. The pain from those things gets in the way and makes me question myself.

So I've settled for a slow drip, like a nose bleed that never ends. At this point I'm realizing that the regret of not trying is worse than the pain of doing a faceplant in the gravel parking lot of life :-/

Besides, even a long shot pays off once in awhile.

Josh - I like this idea that a risk should 'test' you. I think that's a good lesson....a risk will always challenge you.

We take risks we stop being boring. Every risk does not need to take you down but it does need to test you. I enjoy taking risks and if I fail it tells me I am living up to my potential.

Appreciate the comments Jennifer!
The truth is....they just took out too many loans on the previous business - ran up credit card debt as well. He's 'digging out' of that hole (which is good) but he's just too scared to take the risk.
But...he keeps finding his way over to visit with me when I'm in that business establishment to talk about 'career'. Hope his 'leap of faith' is coming soon (Time for another Emoticon :) )
Appreciate your input Jennifer! Say hello to that fish-catchin' husband of yours!

Yes, I would take a risk to find work that provided more meaning and provide a better "fit". I took that leap two times in my life, and it has been well worth it. Since this guy sees his previous business as a failure, I would advise him to examine why he considers it a failure; what went wrong and what could he have done differently? That would help to minimize the "risk" he sees in taking another leap. Life is too short to be unhappy in what we do and there are far greater risks than going after your dream!

Yes, I can tell you have no opinions on this :)

It's sad...it's just paralysis for this guy. He remembers his failure. Actually....he's still paying for it (took out a bunch of loans to start a business :(

I still think risk is good...the kind that we don't have a lot of control over. Yes, we should plan...but there is always an element of risk...a leap of faith that makes life worth living :)

Thanks for posting Josh!

It's funny how we say 'risk' - but we sometimes don't think about what the word really means. Risk is something over which you have no control. In this situation, Dude has to make a clear, well thought through, measured, strategic plan - and bam. Risk eliminated and he can move forward confidently.

Then again, it's easier to live under a nebulous cloud of perceived risk. It's easier not to make a 'nonconformist' move. It's easier to never change.

But I have no opinions on the matter... :)

Great points. Many people are afraid to highlight those skills unless they have had a 'titled' position in that area. But...if we've got experience in an area...even if we haven't had a 'title', we should definitely highlight this experiences.

One of the hardest things I just did was rewrite my resume to go after a business development position. I had to look at all the times I used business development skills in my engineering job. It was hard digging and thinking but it worked.

Colin
That dot com bust was a rough time for folks in your industry. But....I bet you've got lots of good talents that could be applied in different roles....even in different industries. Let's find a way to get you to use your talent more fully :).
Thanks for taking time to comment on the article...

The hunt used to be a lot of fun for me back before the dot com bubble burst and I spent two years on the skids. The job I took at that low point is the job I have today. It has changed a lot over the last eight years and the pay has doubled from where I started started with them, but I'm still earning 20k per year less than I was ten years ago, only using half of my talent, and consider myself under valued and underemployed. Why haven't I moved on? Why indeed!

Tracy -
Sounds like you've got a lot happening right now! I applaud you for being willing to take the risks of leaving your job and moving across country. Just the fact that you are taking action could help put you on a more positive path. Is there a community of folks that you can plug into when you get to your new location? If not, I'd suggest that you find one - a good church, a good Rotary Club....a place in which people will love you for who you are, but challenge you as well.
I wish you the best in these big changes!!
In Him,
Brent

I just found this entry and it speaks volumes to me as I am about to make the biggest decision for my life, next to becoming a single mom. I have always lived close to my family and remained where I am due to my grandfather requesting me to remain here. BUT my son and I will be moving to the east coast in August. I will be leaving a job that I know and am comfortable in doing, family, friends, etc. We are setting out with only that which fits in the car, a little money and a ton of hope, fear, anxiety and joy.

The hardest part is not knowing what my specific calling is. I am great at what I do now, but hate it. I am dying a slow death spiritually, mentally and physically. My boss is amazing, but the company does not approve of anyone bettering themselves personally or professionally. I am looking forward to finding life, finding how to dream again and finding out who I am and how I can build others up, be an encourager and leave a more fruitful legacy for my son.

This has been thought about for three years, but circumstances as they are (little money and no place to live after July 31st) have forced me to make a decision to quit doing the same thing, staying in the same financial crises month after month, and feeling shameful daily. Sad it has taken me to lose almost everything to begin living again, but my son and I will make it, be better people for it and have a great new chapter in our lives.

Hi Josh -
I've seen this as well. I've seen people try to keep asking the question until it's an answer that they want...rather than the right answer :)

Sometimes I encounter people that ask questions and keep asking questions because they don't like the answers. They have been given sufficient answers to move forward but still do nothing because they are unwilling to change.

Josh - Good point...it's good to think through things, then take action. You are different than many people - many people think...but never do. :)

For me to change I have to think about it for a bit then I resolve it is what I am going to do. Depending on the size of the change I will think about it at different lengths of time.
